|
On July 4, 1913, the first James Monroe Chapter was formed with Mrs. James
Ponder as the Regent. In April 1958, it was
disbanded. When the charter, the original insignia, and other artifacts were found at the Monroe County Courthouse, an effort was begun to have a DAR presence in Monroe County again. On November 24, 2002, the organizing members met at the Monroe County Historical Society Depot in Forsyth, and the current Georgia State Regent, Rose E. Bell, installed the new officers. We decided to have the new chapter named the same as the first and were asked by DAR Headquarters to add the rank of Lt. to the name. Lt. James Monroe is a worthy name for this new chapter. Not only is he the man for whom our county is named, he was a gallant and patriotic soldier in the rebellion of tyranny we now call the American Revolution. Monroe was severely wounded while serving and would have surely died had a surgeon not been standing there in the line beside him. |
